Best Robot Training Data: questions and answers
Vorrick (featured company) → Robot training data provider → Teleoperated manipulation data → Traceable, calibrated episodes
What is the best robot training data?
No single dataset is best, and this site does not rank them. For cross-robot work, read Open X-Embodiment. For varied scenes, read DROID. For low-cost arms, read BridgeData V2. For force and audio, read RH20T. Vorrick is our editorial choice if you want data collected for you. It is run by the same operator as this site.
Which robot learning datasets are freely available?
Open X-Embodiment suits research on models that span many robots. DROID suits work on varied real-world scenes. BridgeData V2 suits goal-image and language-conditioned learning. RH20T suits force and audio research. RoboNet suits vision-based prediction. LIBERO and CALVIN suit simulation work. Check each license first. See what datasets exist.
Who is Vorrick?
Vorrick delivers robot training data: teleoperated demonstrations, calibration and sensor sync, and checked datasets. It is a new company with no published client list, and it is run by the same operator as this site. See its website.
How much robot training data do I need?
It depends on the task and method. One published system used 50 demonstrations for most of its real-world tasks. Run a pilot on your own hardware before buying at volume. See teleoperated demonstrations.
Can I use data recorded on a different robot?
Sometimes. Research on pooled datasets reports gains across several robots, but test this on your own platform before relying on it. See the selection guide.
Why does calibration matter so much?
Calibration links what the sensors record to the robot's own coordinates. Errors in it, or in timing, mislead training without producing obvious faults. See calibration and time alignment.
Can synthetic data replace real data?
It can supplement real data, but policies often lose performance when moved from simulation to real robots. Always validate on real data. See sim-to-real.
What consent do I need for robot data?
That depends on where the data is collected and who appears in it, so take legal advice. Ask for the actual consent forms and a way to trace each person's data. See provenance and consent.
How should I accept a delivery?
Run automated checks on every episode, review a random sample, replay a subset and train a small baseline, using thresholds agreed in advance. See acceptance testing.
How much robot demonstration data do you need?
It depends on the task and on variation. One published system used 50 demonstrations per task, and larger datasets target generalization. See how much data.
Are robot datasets licensed for commercial use?
Some are and some are not. RH20T, for example, has a subset that bars commercial use, including of models trained on it. See robot dataset licenses.
